Pierre Harvey
Pierre was the first Canadian male athlete to compete in both a winter and a summer Olympics in the same year (1984 Sarajevo in cross country skiing and 1984 Los Angeles in cycling). He had made his Olympic debut in 1976 in Montreal when he competed in cycling, finishing 24th in the individual road race. In 1988 he competed in his fourth Olympic Games as a member of Canada’s cross country ski team at the Calgary Winter Olympics.
Pierre competed in cross country skiing from 1982 to 1988 and won three gold medals in World Cup competition. He was a two time winner of the 30 kilometre free technique event (both times at Falun, Sweden, first in 1987 and again in 1988). Five days after his 1988 win, he again won gold, this time in the 50 kilometre free technique Holmonkolen event in Oslo. Pierre also won a bronze World Cup medal, when he came third in the 30 kilometre mass start free technique event in Kastelruth, Italy in December 1987.
In 1987 Pierre won the world-famous Norwegian Birkebeiner, 54 kilometres in length, and was the first non-Scandinavian to win this prestigious race since its debut in 1932.
Domestically, in January 1986 Pierre became the first Canadian skier to win all four of the men’s events at the Canadian National Ski Championships: the 30 and 50 kilometre classic races, the 3 x 10 kilometre relay, and the 50 kilometre free technique event.
Pierre has been inducted into both the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame (1992) and the Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame (2006) and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1988.
