Canada at the World Juniors Part 2: 1979 Mont Ste. Anne
In 1979 Quebec City hosted the first major international nordic event to be held in Canada, the second edition of the World Junior Nordic Championships. (note: Inuvik has hosted the `Top of the World Championships` race series, a significant international event in it`s early years, since 1968).
The event was held at the Parc du Mont Ste. Anne. New trails and a brand new race building and stadium area were built for the event, the same location as the 2012 Haywood Ski Nationals. A jumping hill was located near the present alpine resort, utilizing the terrain below the ski hill, heading down by the river.
There was strong international representation and the Canadian team was led by Whitehorse`s Monique Wattereus in 15th, with long time NST member and Olympian, Honey Harbour Ontario`s Angela Schmidt two places back in 17th. Jenny Walker of Ottawa was 36th and Johanne Ross of Quebec, 37th. Burns Lake, BC`s Marvin Strimbold, was the top male in 29th, Cantley, Quebec’s Richard Weber was 33rd, and Ontarians Dirk Van Wijk from Ottawa and Bracebridge`s Ken Hawthorn, were 37th and 49th respectively.
The relay teams both finished in 9th place.
