Waxing techniques have changed radically over the years from open fire heating of skis to the use of torches and on to heat guns and irons. Below are some of the developments.

Wax was applied heated over the fire then smoothed by hand
Pine tar was used to waterproof wood ski bottoms…applied with a brush, heated with a torch and wiped dry
  • Hard waxes were smoothed with corks… real cork second from left and the others were synthetic materials
