Fibreglass ski bases have gone from clear ABS through plyethylene to textured bases to provide mechanical grip on snow. Some of the iterations are displayed below.

Mohair appeared in the late 70’s and has now re-appeared (2018) on nearly all ski makes as a no-wax option – the step ski base did not work well – especially those with negative steps (ie. below the general base level)

Continuous “fishscales” over the whole ski base provided super grip but poor glide

Different scale shapes provided more or less grip

In an attempt to increase glide the scales were shallow over tip and tail but more agressive under foot

Finally the scales were placed only under the foot (mid-section) of the ski

Again … many patterns were tried to maintain grip but to improve glide

Different substances were also tried … this one called the Mica Base … later ones used polypropyene for grip

In the 80’s bases were marked for waxing ease…shorter for klisters and longer for hard waxes… a Fischer Ski above
